Function: Compliance

Compliance covers products built to help an organisation meet its own legal obligations to a regulator, public register or tax authority. A product is included if it has at least one feature that does this. This function is very local, since software built for one country’s rules has little use elsewhere.

Included features are entity filings, register updates, registry-linked status tracking with deadlines, financial statements in a legally prescribed format, and the organisation’s own tax returns.

Not included were donor and member tax reporting (such as Gift Aid and donation receipts), features that only make a product’s own way of working compliant (such as GDPR tools and audit trails), and generic bookkeeping, document storage or minute-keeping. Funder reporting was also left out, unless a government funding regime is itself a legal requirement. Legally required membership rolls were kept under membership.
