About DataSystematic
The idea for DataSystematic grew out of Jan’s experience in implementing nonprofit systems, when he became acutely aware of how critical selection and implementation knowledge is to the success or failure of projects. It is key to project success.
Many nonprofits operate on limited budgets and may lack specialist internal knowledge. Meanwhile, guidance and resources are often unsuitable: limited in scope, more suitable for large-scale corporate environments, highly technical or specific to a particular platform.
Jan started DataSystematic to grow specialist expertise within nonprofit organisations, and make this expertise widely accessible. He aims to build comprehensive materials suitable for a general audience which is unsure of where to start. The materials outline not a single best approach for one type of project, technology or organisation, but a way to adapt that approach to their own project and scale.
DataSystematic is independent, and the directory carries no affiliate commission on any system.
About the founder
Jan’s background is in data, systems, evaluation and technology for good.
He has a long-standing interest in technology. In 2009, during an internship while studying at the University of Cambridge, he built a corporate intranet for a marketing agency, providing an early taste of translating requirements into solutions.
From 2016, he moved into the nonprofit and tech-for-good space, pursuing a collaborative PhD in sustainability evaluation in partnership with the sustainability NGO Bioregional. Out of this work came OnePlanet, a digital platform for sustainability strategy, reporting and collaboration, where Jan designed is innovative conceptual architecture and worked as an analyst, whilst completing his doctorate.
In 2023, he took on responsibility for data and systems at an Air Ambulance charity. There he led a complex CRM migration, and was the technical lead on a volunteer management system implementation nominated for a national award from Air Ambulances UK. He also further honed his implementation skills on other projects, including a comprehensive reporting suite and a GIS-based mapping tool that won an AAUK award of its own.
He has continued to build his expertise across major platforms, including certification as a Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate, while staying closely engaged with networks and discussions on systems implementation.
