Organisation & background
NationBuilder is a US company based in Los Angeles, founded in 2009 by Jim Gilliam, originally for political campaigns and later broadened to nonprofits. It maintains an active London/UK office, has a large customer base across many countries, and counts Amnesty International among its named clients.
Functionality
NationBuilder is a CRM and website platform first built for political campaigns and also used for nonprofit advocacy, fundraising and membership. Actions on an organisation’s NationBuilder website, such as petitions, donations and RSVPs, update the person’s profile automatically. Supporters are grouped with live filters, tags and static lists, and Paths track relationships as assignable, step-by-step workflows. ActionButton lets supporters email, call or post to elected officials in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Fundraising separates pledges from donations, peer-to-peer pages credit recruiters, and automated email workflows follow up on page actions.
Localised features
ActionButton supports contacting elected officials in five countries, including the UK. SMS texting is available to US and Canadian customers, text-based event reminders were extended to UK accounts in 2026, and a FrontlineSMS partnership offers wider SMS reach. It has a London office and UK user community.
Implementation model
Self-service, with no vendor-led onboarding or assigned consultant.
Hosting
Cloud-hosted by the vendor.
